Jerez
You can be here in December for about €459, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 17°C days, sea 16°C.
The Jerez horse fair and Cádiz's carnival are the two weeks when rooms vanish and the towns are given over to their own residents; either side of them, spring and autumn are calm. The Atlantic beaches are windy and cool outside high summer, which is fine for walking and bad for lying down.
Best months here: June, September, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Jerez is the inland town of sherry bodegas, horses and flamenco in the gitano quarters, an hour's drive from the Atlantic; Cádiz is the old peninsula city at the end of the train line, salt-white and older than Rome. Together they are Andalusia without the Seville coach tours: tabancos with a glass of fino at eleven, fried fish on the beach, and a seafront that is a real neighbourhood. They suit slow eaters and people who like their cities lived in.
What you can do
- 01Visit a bodega in Jerez, González Byass or a smaller house like Lustau, and taste fino, amontillado and palo cortado in order.
- 02Drink a glass at Tabanco El Pasaje with a plate of chicharrones while flamenco starts in the afternoon.
- 03See the horses at the Real Escuela Andaluza on a rehearsal morning, cheaper and quieter than the show.
- 04Take the train to Cádiz and walk the seafront from La Caleta beach to the Castillo de San Sebastián.
- 05Eat tortillitas de camarones and fried fish in Cádiz's Barrio de la Viña, then the market of Plaza de las Flores.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the old centre of Jerez near Plaza del Arenal, then a night or two inside the walls of Cádiz; the beach hotels in Cádiz's new town are far from the point of the city.
Unusual things
- ◦The Yeguada de la Cartuja stud outside Jerez, where the Carthusian horse line is bred, open on Saturday mornings.
- ◦Cádiz's Torre Tavira camera obscura, a live image of the roofscape from the highest watchtower.
- ◦The pueblos blancos around Arcos de la Frontera and the Roman city of Baelo Claudia on the beach at Bolonia.
