Why now

Good time in July: 20°C days, 15 rainy days.

Late spring to early autumn is when the harbour baths, outdoor bars and Tivoli are open and the light lasts until eleven; winter is dark by four but the museums and restaurants carry it, and hotel demand drops. Restaurant bookings for the well-known kitchens need weeks of notice year-round.

Best months here: May, June, September. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Copenhagen is a low, brick, bicycle-first city where the harbour is clean enough to swim in and the design shops sell the chairs your grandparents' bank had. It is expensive and a little smug about it, and suits people who want to eat well, walk canals and cycle rather than tick off monuments.

What you can do

  1. 01Swim at Islands Brygge harbour bath, then walk over to Reffen's street-food sheds on Refshaleøen.
  2. 02Cycle the length of Nørrebrogade to Superkilen park and Assistens cemetery, where Andersen and Kierkegaard are buried.
  3. 03See Louisiana's sculpture park and Giacometti room on the coast, 35 minutes by train to Humlebæk.
  4. 04Take the harbour bus (line 991/992) from Nyhavn to the Opera and Refshaleøen instead of a canal tour.
  5. 05Eat smørrebrød at lunch in the Indre By and save the evening for a bakery-run natural-wine bar.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Indre ByThe medieval centre, Strøget, Nyhavn and most hotels; convenient and thoroughly touristed.
VesterbroBehind the station, Istedgade and Kødbyen's old meatpacking halls; bars, restaurants, the easiest first base.
NørrebroMulticultural and lively along Jægersborggade and the lakes; fewer hotels, more apartments.
ChristianshavnCanals, Freetown Christiania and the Church of Our Saviour's spiral spire; calm and central.

Stay in Vesterbro or Christianshavn for a first visit; the Indre By works but costs more for less character. Avoid Ørestad's tower hotels unless you have an early flight.

Unusual things

  • ◦Cisternerne in Frederiksberg, a drained underground water reservoir used for a single art installation each year.
  • ◦Thorvaldsens Museum by Christiansborg, the sculptor's own mausoleum-museum with painted ceilings and plaster casts.
  • ◦Amager Strandpark and the metro to the beach, a 20-minute ride to a long artificial dune island.

Day trips

RoskildeTrain, about 25 minutes — Viking Ship Museum with five excavated hulls and the cathedral where Danish kings are buried.
HelsingørTrain along the coast, about 45 minutes — Kronborg castle, the Hamlet one, and the Maritime Museum sunk into the old dry dock.
