Why now

Good time in September: 31°C days, 19 rainy days, sea 30°C.

Outside the winter peak the resorts are quieter and the sea is warmer, but late summer and early autumn bring sargassum seaweed on the east-facing beaches and the hurricane season. Spring and early summer are the balance most people want.

Best months here: February, March, October. September is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Punta Cana is not a town but a strip of all-inclusive resorts along thirty kilometres of coconut-lined beach at the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. It suits people who want a week of sea, sun and a pool bar with everything arranged; anyone looking for a walkable centre or local street life should base elsewhere in the country.

What you can do

  1. 01Swim at Playa Bávaro in the morning, when the reef keeps the water calm and the beach vendors are still setting up.
  2. 02Take the Hoyo Azul cenote walk at Scape Park, a sinkhole of cold blue water under a limestone cliff.
  3. 03Snorkel or dive the reef off Cabeza de Toro, calmer than the open Atlantic side.
  4. 04Drive up to Higüey to see the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, the country's main pilgrimage church.
  5. 05Eat at a comedor on the road to El Cortecito: mangú, fried fish and a Presidente, away from the buffets.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

BávaroThe longest run of resorts and the widest beach; El Cortecito is the one small strip of shops and bars outside the gates.
Cap CanaGated marina and golf enclave south of the airport; quieter beaches at Juanillo, everything requires a car or shuttle.
Uvero AltoAdults-only and family resorts far to the north; rougher surf, more isolation, an hour from the airport.
Punta Cana villageThe original planned settlement by the airport; a few restaurants and shops, useful for a last night.

Bávaro is the default and sensible choice for a first visit, close to the airport and with the calmest beach; check whether a resort faces the open Atlantic, where flags often go red.

Unusual things

  • ◦Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve, a private forest of freshwater lagoons you can swim in, ten minutes from the airport.
  • ◦The Manatí Park area's road inland to Verón, where the resort staff live and the colmados sell food at local pace.
  • ◦Playa Macao to the north, a public surf beach with fish shacks and no hotel behind it.

Day trips

Isla SaonaBus and catamaran from Bayahibe, a full day from the resorts — The classic excursion: a sandbar with starfish, a long beach, and a large crowd doing the same thing.
Santo DomingoBus or driver, about 2.5 to 3 hours west — The oldest colonial city in the Americas, the Zona Colonial and Calle El Conde; long for a day, worth an overnight.
Los Haitises National ParkDriver to Sabana de la Mar then boat, most of a day — Mangrove channels, limestone islets and caves with Taíno pictographs.
