Why now
Shoulder season in April: 18°C days, sea 16°C.
May, June and September give open terraces and a coast road that still moves, with the sea warm from June; in July and August the corniche jams and Monaco and Antibes fill. The Nice carnival in late winter and the Cannes film festival and Monaco Grand Prix in late spring make hotels scarce along the whole coast.
Best months here: July, August, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Nice is a proper city that happens to have a pebble beach: Italianate old town, a Belle Époque seafront, a Sunday market on the Cours Saleya and a tram that runs from the airport to the port. The Côte d'Azur east and west of it is a string of villages, capes and money, connected by one of the best coastal rail lines in Europe. It suits people who want sea and museums in the same day and do not mind paying for a sunbed.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Promenade des Anglais at seven in the morning, then climb Castle Hill for the view over the port.
- 02Eat socca and pissaladière at Chez Pipo or from a stall on the Cours Saleya.
- 03Take the train to Villefranche-sur-Mer and walk the Cap Ferrat coastal path to the Rothschild villa.
- 04See the Matisse and Chagall museums in Cimiez, a bus ride up the hill among the Roman ruins.
- 05Ride the bus along the Grande Corniche to Èze, then walk down the Nietzsche path to the sea.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay between the old town and the port, or on the streets just behind the promenade; the far west of the seafront near the airport is a long walk from anything.
Unusual things
- ◦The Villa Kérylos at Beaulieu-sur-Mer, a 1900s reconstruction of a Greek house on a rock over the water.
- ◦The Villa Santo Sospir at Cap Ferrat, its walls drawn on by Cocteau, visited on a booked tour.
- ◦The Musée des Arts Asiatiques in a Kenzo Tange building on a lake in the Parc Phoenix, near the airport.

Local transport
- Airport to city
- Tram L2, 25 min, €1.70
- Car needed?
- No — walkable or good public transport
- Getting around
- Tram line 2 links the airport to the port in about 30 minutes, and the TER coastal trains connect Cannes to Menton every 15 to 30 minutes. A car is a liability in summer; the corniche buses are slow but worth the ride.
