Montego Bay
You can be here in May for about €1,239, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in May: 31°C days, 22 rainy days, sea 30°C.
The dry winter months are the reliable season and the busiest; late summer is hot, wet and inside hurricane season. Cruise days change the character of the beaches and the Hip Strip entirely, and the big reggae festival fills every room in the parish for a week in high summer.
Best months here: January, February, December. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Montego Bay is two things stapled together: a resort corridor of gated all-inclusives along the Ironshore coast, and a working Jamaican port town of markets, minibuses and Sam Sharpe Square. Most visitors never cross between them, which is a pity, because the food and the music are on the town side. Treat it as a base for the west of the island rather than a destination in itself.
What you can do
- 01Swim at Doctor's Cave Beach early in the morning, before the cruise arrivals take the loungers.
- 02Eat jerk pork and chicken at Scotchies on the Ironshore road, cooked slowly over pimento wood.
- 03Tour Rose Hall Great House for the Annie Palmer legend, then Greenwood for the better original interiors.
- 04Raft the Martha Brae on a bamboo punt near Falmouth, poled downstream for about an hour.
- 05Walk downtown around Sam Sharpe Square in the morning and buy patties where the queue already is.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
The Ironshore and Rose Hall resorts suit a week of doing very little; the Hip Strip puts you within walking distance of beaches and bars but with steady street pressure to buy things.
Unusual things
- ◦Rocklands Bird Sanctuary at Anchovy, in the hills south of town, where doctor birds feed from a bottle held in your hand.
- ◦The Rastafari Indigenous Village on the Great River, a small community that hosts visits, drumming and cooking sessions.
- ◦Greenwood Great House east of Rose Hall, still holding the Barrett family's books, instruments and furniture, and far less visited.

Local transport

- Recommended for most of what is worth seeing
- Getting around
- The airport is ten minutes from the Hip Strip, so transfers are short. Licensed red-plate route taxis are the local way to move short distances, Knutsford Express coaches link the north coast towns on a timetable, and a hire car means driving on the left on narrow, patchy roads.

Good to know
Hurricane season runs from early summer to late autumn. Jamaica also carries crime advisories: the violence is concentrated in specific inner-city areas rather than the resort belt, but use licensed taxis after dark, skip unlit streets and leave valuables in the room.
