Málaga
You can be here in February for about €725, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in February: 18°C days, sea 15°C.
The season runs all year: winter is mild and the city stays open, spring and autumn suit walking, and summer is hot but tempered by the sea. The August feria is a week of daytime drinking in the centre and Holy Week processions draw crowds; both need rooms booked ahead.
Best months here: June, September, November. February is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Málaga is a port city that spent decades as the airport for the Costa del Sol and has since become a destination of its own: Picasso's birthplace, a Moorish castle, a rebuilt centre of museums and a beach at the end of the pedestrian street. It suits people who want a city with the sea attached and who use the resorts to the west as day trips, not the reverse.
What you can do
- 01Climb the Gibralfaro for the view over the bullring and port, then walk down through the Alcazaba's gardens.
- 02See the Picasso Museum and his birthplace on Plaza de la Merced, then the Centre Pompidou's coloured cube on the quay.
- 03Eat espetos of sardines grilled over a boat of embers at a chiringuito on Pedregalejo beach, at lunch, not dinner.
- 04Drink sweet Málaga wine from the barrel at Antigua Casa de Guardia, then tapas at the Atarazanas market bars.
- 05Walk the Caminito del Rey, a booked walkway pinned to a gorge wall an hour north by train and bus.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Centro Histórico or Soho for a first visit, La Malagueta for the beach; the resorts west of the city, from Torremolinos to Marbella, are a different holiday.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museo de Málaga in the old customs house, with nineteenth-century Málaga school paintings and a Phoenician collection.
- ◦The English Cemetery on Avenida de Príes, the first Protestant cemetery in mainland Spain, with a garden of shells and cypresses.
- ◦The Roman theatre below the Alcazaba, uncovered in the 1950s beneath a cultural centre that was then demolished to reveal it.
