London
You can be here in October for about €1,004, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 16°C days, fares below average.
Late spring and early autumn offer long days, parks in use and slightly lower hotel demand than summer, when school holidays and the peak of visitors coincide. Theatre runs all year, but December bookings and January sales change the crowds; check strike dates on the Tube and rail before travelling.
Best months here: June, August, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

London is less a city than a federation of villages stitched together by the Tube, where a twenty-minute journey can take you from Georgian squares to a Bangladeshi market to a Victorian park. The major museums are free, the pubs close early and the weather is not the point. It suits people who choose two or three areas and give each a day, rather than trying to cover the map.
What you can do
- 01Spend a morning in the British Museum or the V&A, both free, both far too big to finish.
- 02Walk the South Bank from Westminster Bridge to Borough Market and eat lunch from a stall.
- 03Take the Overground to Hackney or Peckham for the pubs, the bakeries and the London residents actually live in.
- 04See a play at the National, the Almeida or the Globe; day seats exist for most West End shows.
- 05Go up Primrose Hill or Parliament Hill at dusk for the free skyline.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay anywhere inside the Circle line for a first visit, or in Hackney or Southwark for a second; avoid Leicester Square and the Bayswater hotel strips that trade on proximity alone.
Unusual things
- ◦Sir John Soane's Museum on Lincoln's Inn Fields, an architect's house of casts, paintings and a sarcophagus in the basement.
- ◦Wilton's Music Hall in Whitechapel, the oldest surviving music hall, with a bar and a small programme.
- ◦The Thames foreshore at low tide below the Tate Modern, with clay pipes and Roman tile if you look; check the tide tables.

Good to know
Phone snatching by riders on bikes and mopeds is common in central London; keep phones out of sight at kerbs and outside stations.
