Why now

Good time in October: 21°C days, 15 rainy days, sea 21°C, fares below average.

Spring and autumn are the seasons for both: the coast paths are open, the sea is swimmable into October, and the trains are not yet packed. In summer the Via dell'Amore needs a booked slot and the Cinque Terre trains are shoulder to shoulder; the boat show and other fairs fill Genoa's hotels for a week at a time.

Best months here: July, August, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Genoa is a vertical port city of palaces on one street and alleys narrow enough to touch both walls, with a working harbour that was never made pretty. It suits people who like cities with a dark side and good food, and who treat the Cinque Terre as a day out rather than the point; the villages are lovely and, from Easter to October, overrun.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Via Garibaldi's Rolli palaces, then the Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco galleries for Van Dyck and Strozzi.
  2. 02Eat focaccia from a forno for breakfast, then trofie al pesto and farinata in a trattoria in the caruggi.
  3. 03Ride the Zecca-Righi funicular or the Castelletto lift for the view over the roofs and the port.
  4. 04Take the train to the Cinque Terre, walk Monterosso to Vernazza in the morning, and swim at Monterosso after.
  5. 05Visit the Aquarium on the Porto Antico if travelling with children, or the Galata sea museum next door if not.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Centro StoricoThe medieval caruggi between the port and Via Garibaldi; atmospheric, dense, dim after dark in parts; the base for a first visit.
CastellettoThe hillside above the centre, reached by lift; Liberty villas, views, quiet, ten minutes down to everything.
Boccadasse and AlbaroA fishing cove of painted houses at the end of Corso Italia, with residential streets behind; for evenings by the sea.
Monterosso and LevantoFor a Cinque Terre stay, Monterosso has the beach and the hotels; Levanto, one stop north, has rooms and a calmer town.

Stay in the upper Centro Storico near Via Garibaldi or in Castelletto; the alleys nearest the port below Via Pré are rough at night. For the Cinque Terre, sleep in Levanto or La Spezia rather than the villages in summer.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Staglieno cemetery, a hillside of nineteenth-century marble mourners reached by bus from Piazza Corvetto.
  • ◦The Lanterna, the sixteenth-century lighthouse, reached by a walkway from the ferry terminal and open on limited days.
  • ◦The Casella narrow-gauge railway, climbing from Piazza Manin into the Apennine hills behind the city in about an hour.

Day trips

Cinque TerreRegional train to Monterosso, about an hour and a quarter; the Cinque Terre Express between villages — Walk one stretch of the coast path, swim, and leave before the afternoon crush; buy the park card if walking.
Camogli and San FruttuosoTrain, about 30 minutes, then boat or a two-hour walk — A tall-housed fishing town and a Benedictine abbey in a cove reachable only by sea or on foot.
Portofino and Santa MargheritaTrain to Santa Margherita, about 35 minutes, then bus or boat — Santa Margherita for the harbour and gelato; Portofino for an hour's look, then the walk up to the lighthouse.

The Cinque Terre paths close after heavy rain and the Via dell'Amore needs a booked slot; wear proper shoes, since flip-flops on the paths are no longer allowed.
