Cluj
You can be here in December for about €480, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 5°C days.
Cluj empties of students in July and August and then fills with Untold and Electric Castle, when rooms vanish for a week; term time gives the city its character. For the Saxon towns, September brings the harvest and cool walking weather without the summer coaches.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Cluj is Transylvania's university city, Romanian and Hungarian at once, with a Gothic square, students who keep the bars of Piezișă open and tech money filling the new blocks. It is the practical gate to the region rather than the point of it; the Saxon towns and the Apuseni hills are all two or three hours away. It suits people who want a base with life in it, and a car.
What you can do
- 01Start on Piața Unirii: St Michael's Gothic nave, the Matthias Corvinus statue, coffee in the Bánffy Palace courtyard.
- 02Climb Cetățuia hill at dusk for the roofs and the Someș, then eat varză à la Cluj, the local layered cabbage and pork.
- 03Descend into Salina Turda, a salt mine with a Ferris wheel and a boating lake on its floor, 40 minutes south.
- 04Walk Turda Gorge on the same day: a limestone canyon with a flat riverside path and eagles overhead.
- 05Drive to Sighișoara for the citadel and clock tower, and stay the night rather than fighting the day-trip crowds.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the centre between Piața Unirii and Piața Muzeului; avoid the business hotels out by the mall and the airport, which leave you dependent on taxis.
Unusual things
- ◦Házsongárd cemetery, a hillside of Hungarian tombs since the 1580s, with Transylvanian princes and professors under overgrown vaults.
- ◦Hoia-Baciu forest west of the city, known for ghost stories and a round clearing where nothing grows; the open-air Ethnographic Park sits at its edge.
- ◦Rimetea, a Hungarian village of white houses under the cliff of Piatra Secuiului, where the sun is said to rise twice.

Good to know
Brown bears live in the Transylvanian mountains; keep to marked trails, and never feed or approach the ones that beg on roadsides near Brașov.
