Alicante
You can be here in December for about €455, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in December: 18°C days, dry, sea 16°C.
The city works all year: mild winters for the esplanade, spring and autumn for walking, and a summer that is hot but sea-cooled. The Hogueras bonfire festival at midsummer fills the city for a week with fireworks and street parties.
Best months here: June, September, October. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Alicante is a port city under a castle rock, with a palm-lined seafront, a tiled esplanade and a beach in the middle of town, and it is more Spanish and less resort than its airport suggests. It suits people who want winter warmth and a working city, and who use it as a base for Elche and the rice country; the Costa Blanca resorts to the north are a different holiday.
What you can do
- 01Take the lift up through the rock to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara for the view over the bay and the Postiguet.
- 02Eat arroz a banda or arroz con costra at lunch in a local rice restaurant, and turrón from Jijona after.
- 03Walk the Explanada's marble waves in the evening, then tapas in El Barrio under the castle.
- 04Take the tram along the coast to the Playa de San Juan or El Campello, a long strand north of the city.
- 05See the MARQ archaeological museum's Iberian and Roman collections, then the Lucentum ruins at Albufereta.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Centro near the Explanada or in El Barrio for a first visit; the Playa de San Juan is for a beach-first week, and Benidorm is not Alicante.
Unusual things
- ◦The Elche palm grove, a Moorish irrigated palm orchard in the middle of a city, 20 minutes away by train.
- ◦Tabarca, a walled islet about 50 minutes by boat from the port, with a marine reserve and fish caldero at lunch.
- ◦The Cabo de las Huertas headland between the city and San Juan, with rock coves and a lighthouse walk.
