Valencia
You can be here in September for about €649, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in September: 27°C days, sea 26°C.
The Fallas festival in March fills the city with fireworks, noise and visitors for a week and empties the hotels of rooms; late spring and autumn are calmer and the sea is warm into October. August is hot but survivable with the beach.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Valencia is Spain's third city and the most relaxed of the big three, with a dried riverbed turned into a nine-kilometre park, a Gothic silk exchange, a Calatrava science complex and a wide sandy beach on the tram line. It suits people who want a city holiday with a swim in it, and who like their paella eaten at lunch, by the sea, on a Sunday.
What you can do
- 01Walk or cycle the Turia gardens from the Bioparc to the City of Arts and Sciences, the old riverbed end to end.
- 02See La Lonja's twisted columns, then drink horchata with fartons at Horchatería Santa Catalina or a Mercado Central bar.
- 03Eat paella valenciana, with rabbit and beans, at lunch in a beachfront restaurant at La Malvarrosa or El Cabanyal.
- 04Take the tram to Malvarrosa beach, then walk the Cabanyal's tiled fishermen's houses behind it.
- 05Climb the Miguelete tower, see the chalice the cathedral holds as the Holy Grail, then the Ceramics Museum's alabaster doorway.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in El Carmen or Ruzafa for a first visit, the Cabanyal for the beach; the area around the Estació del Nord is fine but bland.
Unusual things
- ◦The Almoina archaeological site under the square beside the cathedral, Roman baths and a Visigothic apse beneath glass.
- ◦Bombas Gens, an art centre in a 1930s hydraulic pump factory in Marxalenes, with an Art Deco façade and a medieval cellar.
- ◦The Albufera lagoon south of the city, rice paddies and boat trips at sunset from El Palmar, reached by city bus.

Good to know
Fallas week in March brings continuous firecrackers and closed streets; it is either the reason to come or the reason to avoid it.
