San Juan
You can be here in October for about €1,615, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in October: 30°C days, 20 rainy days, sea 31°C, fares below average.
The dry winter months are also the busiest and priciest, and the shoulder either side gives warm water with fewer people. Hurricane season shapes the second half of the year, and a storm anywhere in the Atlantic can affect flights and power days after it passes.
Best months here: January, March, November. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

San Juan is a fortified Spanish colonial town on a small island, attached to a modern Caribbean city that does the eating, drinking and arguing. Old San Juan fills with cruise passengers by day and belongs to residents again in the evening; Santurce and Loíza street are where the food and music actually live. It suits people who want history and beach in the same week without pretending the island is only a resort.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Paseo del Morro along the bay wall, then climb into Castillo San Felipe del Morro above it.
- 02Give Castillo San Cristóbal an hour for its tunnels and the sentry boxes over the Atlantic.
- 03Eat fried snacks at the Piñones kiosks east of Isla Verde: alcapurrias, bacalaítos, pinchos off the grill.
- 04Go to La Placita de Santurce on a Thursday or Friday evening, when the market square turns into a bar.
- 05Spend a morning at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, then walk Calle Loíza for lunch.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Old San Juan for the walls and the evenings, Condado or Ocean Park if the beach is the point; the Isla Verde strip is convenient for the airport and short on character.
Unusual things
- ◦Balneario El Escambrón, a reef-sheltered swimming cove beside the old fortifications, used mainly by locals.
- ◦The Santurce art blocks around Calle Cerra, layered with murals left by successive editions of the Santurce es Ley festival.
- ◦Cementerio Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis, the marble cemetery wedged between El Morro's walls and the sea.

- Airport to city
- Taxi, 20 min, ~€20

- Recommended for most of what is worth seeing
- Getting around
- Rideshare works across the metropolitan area and the free trolleys loop around Old San Juan, but the Tren Urbano serves neither the old city nor the airport. Rent a car only for the days you leave San Juan, and expect slow traffic on the coastal roads.

Good to know
Hurricane season runs from early summer to late autumn, and the island's electricity grid remains fragile: outages happen outside storm season too, so favour accommodation with a generator or backup power.
