Why now

Prime time in December: 30°C days, dry, sea 23°C.

Spring brings the wildflower season across the state and the mildest weather; autumn is warm and dry with the sea still swimmable. Summer heat above forty degrees is common, and the afternoon sea breeze, the Fremantle Doctor, is the city's daily relief.

Best months here: January, February, November. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Perth is the most isolated large city on earth, a low, sunny sprawl on the Swan River with Indian Ocean beaches at the end of most streets. It suits people who want beaches, wine and space with a city's conveniences, and who accept that the interesting country starts a long drive away.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk or cycle Kings Park at sunrise for the skyline across the river and the bushland trails.
  2. 02Take the train to Fremantle for the markets, the prison tour and a beer at the Little Creatures brewery.
  3. 03Ferry to Rottnest Island, hire a bike and swim at The Basin; look for quokkas at dusk.
  4. 04Swim at Cottesloe in the morning and eat fish and chips on the grass in the evening.
  5. 05Eat in Northbridge's Chinatown or along Beaufort Street in Mount Lawley, where the city goes out.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

CBD and NorthbridgeThe centre and its nightlife district across the tracks; hotels, bars, the museum, Elizabeth Quay.
FremantleThe port town at the river mouth, 30 minutes by train; Victorian streets, markets, a rougher edge, the better base for character.
CottesloeThe beach suburb between the city and Fremantle; a few hotels, a train line, evenings by the water.
Leederville and Mount LawleyInner suburbs of cafés and bars along Oxford and Beaufort streets; residential, close to the city.

The CBD for convenience, Fremantle for character, Cottesloe for the beach; most of the city's interest is outside the centre.

Unusual things

  • ◦The WA Museum Boola Bardip's Aboriginal galleries, and the Perth Mint's gold pour a few streets away.
  • ◦The Pinnacles Desert at Nambung, limestone pillars on a sand plain, about two hours north.
  • ◦Penguin Island off Rockingham, an hour south, with a small penguin colony and sea lions on the sandbar.

Day trips

Rottnest IslandFerry from Fremantle, 30 minutes, or from the city, 90 minutes — Car-free island of bays and quokkas; cycle, swim, and book early in summer.
Swan ValleyCar or river cruise, about 30 to 45 minutes — The oldest wine region in the state, close and easy, with breweries and chocolate factories on the same loop.
Margaret RiverCar, about 3 hours south — Cabernet, surf beaches and karri forest; too far for a day, ideal for two or three nights.

Good to know

The sun is extremely strong; UV warnings apply most of the year, and summer heat and bushfire days can close parks and roads.
