Osaka
You can be here in October for about €1,482, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in October: 24°C days, fares below average.
It is a year-round city, but Golden Week, Obon and the cherry-blossom weeks fill hotels across Kansai and price them accordingly; the Tenjin Matsuri brings boats and fireworks to the river in high summer. Winter is dry and clear and the crab season is on.
Best months here: May, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Osaka is the Japanese city that talks back: merchants' town, comedy capital, a place where eating standing up at a counter under the Dotonbori neon is the point rather than a compromise. It has fewer temples than Kyoto and does not mind; it suits people who rate a city by its lunch.
What you can do
- 01Eat kushikatsu in Shinsekai under the Tsutenkaku tower, no double-dipping in the sauce.
- 02Walk Dotonbori at night from the Glico sign to Hozenji Yokocho's moss-covered statue.
- 03Take the Midosuji line to Namba and eat okonomiyaki and takoyaki at counters in Ura-Namba.
- 04Visit Osaka Castle park early, then the Museum of Housing and Living's Edo-period street reconstruction.
- 05Spend a day at Universal Studios Japan or the Kaiyukan aquarium if you have children or a whale shark interest.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Namba for eating and late nights, Umeda for train logistics and day trips; anything on the Midosuji line between them works. Avoid the far side of Osaka Bay unless the aquarium or USJ is the reason.
Unusual things
- ◦The Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses in Hattori Ryokuchi park, a dozen thatched houses moved from across the country.
- ◦Tsuruhashi, the Korean market district by the JR loop line, yakiniku smoke and kimchi stalls under the tracks.
- ◦The National Bunraku Theatre in Nipponbashi, puppet theatre with English audio guides and short single-act tickets.
