Why now

Shoulder season in December: 7°C days.

It is a year-round city with a real winter and a heavy, half-empty August when residents leave for the mountains and the coast; late spring and September are when the park cafés and terraces fill. Most museums and Peleș Castle close on Mondays, which matters on a short weekend.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Bucharest is a city of interrupted plans: Parisian villas beside a dictator's boulevard, Orthodox churches hidden behind the apartment blocks that were built to hide them, and a fast, loud Old Town of bars. It is scruffy, walkable and good at eating late, and it suits people who find that mixture more interesting than pretty.

What you can do

  1. 01Tour the Palace of the Parliament with your passport, then see the contemporary art of MNAC in its back wing.
  2. 02Walk Calea Victoriei from the Athenaeum past Revolution Square to the CEC Palace, stopping at the Art Museum's medieval gallery.
  3. 03Eat mici with mustard and a beer at Caru' cu Bere, then find Stavropoleos church's carved courtyard next door.
  4. 04Spend a morning at the Village Museum in Herăstrău Park: wooden churches and farmsteads moved here from every region.
  5. 05Visit the Museum of the Romanian Peasant for icons, textiles and painted glass, then coffee under the trees at its café.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Lipscani (Old Town)Bars, terraces, stag groups and a few real churches among the ruin-pubs; see it once, sleep elsewhere.
Calea Victoriei and Piața RomanăThe grand boulevard, the museums and the better hotels; the sensible first-visit base.
CotroceniVillas, the botanical garden and neighbourhood cafés west of the centre; quiet, a short tram ride in.
Dorobanți and FloreascaEmbassies, restaurants and the moneyed north near Herăstrău Park; good eating, a taxi from the sights.

Stay along Calea Victoriei or around Piața Romană and Universitate for walking distance to everything; the Old Town is for a night out, not for sleeping.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Ceaușescu family villa in Primăverii, toured room by room, gold-tapped bathrooms and indoor pool included.
  • ◦Bellu Cemetery, where Eminescu and the 19th-century elite lie under art nouveau tombs, a tram ride south of Unirii.
  • ◦The Macca-Vilacrosse passage, a horseshoe of yellow glass roof off Calea Victoriei, now mostly hookah cafés but still worth the walk-through.

Day trips

Sinaia and Peleș CastleTrain from Gara de Nord, about 1.5 to 2 hours — The royal family's Carpathian castle of carved wood and stained glass; closed Mondays, with a queue by mid-morning.
BrașovTrain, about 2.5 to 3 hours — A Saxon old town under Tâmpa hill with the Black Church; Bran Castle is a bus ride further and mostly a souvenir stop.
Mogoșoaia PalaceCar or bus, about 40 minutes north-west — Brâncoveanu's lakeside palace with arcaded loggias; a lunch trip rather than a full day.

Good to know

Taxi overcharging at the airport and Gara de Nord is the common scam; use an app or the official taxi machines in the arrivals hall.
