Why now
Prime time in June: 27°C days.
The city is at its most itself in the calm months, when the cafés are full and the Barcolana regatta in autumn brings thousands of boats to the gulf for a weekend. Summer is for the Barcola seafront, where the whole town swims off the concrete; the bora can arrive in any month and changes the plan for a day.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Trieste is a Habsburg port that ended up in Italy, with a grid of neoclassical insurance palaces facing the sea, Viennese coffee houses that take the ritual seriously, and the bora wind that occasionally closes the seafront. It has none of the Italian picturesque and suits readers, walkers and people who like a city that is still working things out.
What you can do
- 01Sit in Caffè San Marco or Caffè degli Specchi with a capo in b, which is what a macchiato is called here.
- 02Walk the Molo Audace at sunset, then the Piazza Unità d'Italia, open on one side to the sea.
- 03Take tram-replacement bus 2 to Opicina and walk the Napoleonica path along the karst edge above the gulf.
- 04See Miramare castle and its park on the shore, Maximilian's white folly before Mexico.
- 05Eat jota, a bean and sauerkraut soup, and a plate of boiled pork from a buffet like Da Pepi.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Borgo Teresiano or Cavana for a first visit; both are walkable to the station and the sea. Avoid rooms near the port road on windy nights.
Unusual things
- ◦Risiera di San Sabba, the rice factory used as a Nazi camp, now a stark national monument in the port suburbs.
- ◦The Grotta Gigante on the Karst, a single cave chamber large enough to hold St Peter's dome.
- ◦Osmize on the plateau, tracked via a website and a branch hung over the gate; wine, eggs and cured meat at a farm table.

Good to know
The bora wind can gust above 100 km/h in winter, and the city puts ropes along exposed streets; keep clear of the seafront on those days.
