Fuerteventura
You can be here in May for about €660, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in May: 24°C days, dry, sea 21°C.
Winter is the season for sun and swell, summer for wind and warm water at the Sotavento lagoon; spring and autumn are calmer and less booked. The island is never crowded away from the two resort poles at Corralejo and Jandía.
Best months here: September, October, November. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Fuerteventura is the oldest, driest and emptiest of the main Canaries: a long ochre island of dunes, goat farms and beaches that go on for kilometres, with a wind that never quite stops. It suits surfers, kitesurfers, families who want sand, and anyone happy to drive long straight roads; it has almost no towns worth the name and no shade.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Corralejo dunes to the sea at dawn, then the boat to Lobos island for its lagoon and volcano walk.
- 02Drive down to Cofete on the track behind the Jandía mountains for a beach with nothing on it.
- 03Swim in the Sotavento lagoon behind its sand bar, where the kitesurfers train, and walk the beach at low tide.
- 04Eat majorero goat cheese from a farm near Antigua, and grilled fish in a harbour restaurant at El Cotillo.
- 05See Betancuria, the island's fifteenth-century first capital in the hills, then the Mirador Morro Velosa's view of the ochre interior.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Corralejo or El Cotillo for the north and the wind sports, Costa Calma for families and the long beach; the island is long, so pick one end.
Unusual things
- ◦The Casa Winter at Cofete, a lone German-built villa behind the beach with wartime theories attached that nobody has confirmed.
- ◦The Ajuy caves, sea caves in the island's oldest rocks, reached by a path from a black-sand fishing village.
- ◦The Ecomuseo La Alcogida at Tefía, a restored hamlet of farmhouses showing how the island lived before the hotels.

Good to know
The wind is constant from spring to autumn, and currents on the west-coast beaches at Cofete and El Cotillo are dangerous for swimmers; use the lagoons and the east coast instead.
