Corfu
You can be here in September for about €737, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in September: 27°C days, sea 26°C.
May, June and September to October keep the old town open without the August heat and coach crowds, with the sea warm from June; Corfu Town's Easter, with pots thrown from balconies, is the busiest weekend of the year. Winter is wet but green, and most resorts close.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Corfu is the greenest Greek island, Venetian for four centuries and briefly British, which shows in the arcaded Liston, the cricket pitch on the Spianada and the ginger beer. It suits people who want an old town with real architecture, olive-terraced hills to walk, and a coast that ranges from Kavos's bars to the northeast's quiet pebble coves, provided they choose the right side.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Old Town from the Liston through Campiello's washing-strung lanes to the Old Fortress at sunset.
- 02Eat pastitsada and sofrito, the island's Venetian-rooted dishes, in a taverna off Nikiforou Theotoki.
- 03Drive the northeast coast from Nissaki to Kassiopi and swim off the rocks at Agni or Kerasia.
- 04Climb Mount Pantokrator by car or on foot for the view to Albania and the monastery on top.
- 05Take the boat to Paxos and Antipaxos for the blue caves and the Voutoumi beach.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should stay in the Old Town for two nights and then on the northeast coast; the west coast at Paleokastritsa suits drivers, and Kavos only suits the clubbing week it was built for.
Unusual things
- ◦The Achilleion palace at Gastouri, built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria and later used by Kaiser Wilhelm.
- ◦Old Perithia, a stone village on Pantokrator abandoned and now half-restored, with tavernas in the ruins.
- ◦The Museum of Asian Art in the Palace of St Michael and St George, the largest such collection in Greece.

- Getting around
- The airport is 3 km from town, ten minutes by taxi or blue bus 15; green KTEL buses reach the main resorts a few times a day. Roads are narrow and winding and a car is the practical way to see more than one coast.
