Tangier
You can be here in April for about €430, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in April: 21°C days, sea 17°C.
Spring and autumn give warm days without the summer crush of Moroccans on holiday, when the beaches and Asilah fill up; winter is mild and often wet. Ramadan slows the day and enlivens the night, and Friday lunch is couscous everywhere that is open.
Best months here: July, September, November. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Tangier is the Moroccan city that looks at Spain across fourteen kilometres of strait, with a medina on a hill, a colonial Ville Nouvelle of Art Deco cafés and a new port and marina that have cleaned up its waterfront. Its literary reputation from Bowles and Burroughs lingers in a few bars but the city has moved on. It suits people who like a port town with a mixed past, an easy entry to Morocco from Europe, and short trips to the coast and the Rif.
What you can do
- 01Walk the medina from the Grand Socco up to the Kasbah museum, then out to the walls above the port.
- 02Drink mint tea at Café Hafa on its terraces over the strait, as people have since 1921.
- 03Visit the Cap Spartel lighthouse and the Caves of Hercules where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
- 04Eat grilled sardines at the port or in the small restaurants of the Petit Socco.
- 05Take the train to Asilah for its whitewashed murals and ramparts, an hour down the coast.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in a medina riad for a first visit or the Ville Nouvelle for easier movement; Malabata is for beach time and business hotels.
Unusual things
- ◦The American Legation Museum in the medina, the first US diplomatic property abroad, with a Paul Bowles wing.
- ◦The Cinémathèque de Tanger in the old Cinema Rif on the Grand Socco, screening films in three languages.
- ◦The Phoenician tombs cut into the rock above Marshan, an informal viewpoint where locals sit at sunset.
