Why now

Good time in October: 31°C days, 24 rainy days, fares below average.

The weather barely changes, so timing is about events: the Formula 1 race week sends hotel rates up sharply, Chinese New Year closes many hawker stalls, and the haze from Indonesian fires can arrive in the dry months. Long weekends bring Malaysians in and Singaporeans out.

Best months here: January, February, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 1.35°, 103.82°, near Singapore. Somewhere else in Singapore the numbers will differ.

Singapore is a city-state that works: air-conditioned, orderly, expensive, with the best cheap food in Asia served in hawker centres run by the state. Under the malls and towers there are shophouse districts, a rainforest reserve and a serious contemporary art scene. It suits stopovers and people who want tropical Asia with the friction removed.

What you can do

  1. 01Eat at Maxwell, Tiong Bahru and Old Airport Road hawker centres; chicken rice, char kway teow, laksa.
  2. 02Walk Tiong Bahru's 1930s flats, then Chinatown's shophouses to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.
  3. 03See Gardens by the Bay's Cloud Forest, then cross to the Marina Bay Sands skypark or the free rooftop bars.
  4. 04Spend a morning at the National Gallery in the old Supreme Court and City Hall.
  5. 05Walk the MacRitchie treetop trail or Bukit Timah's rainforest before the heat.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Chinatown and Tanjong PagarShophouse hotels, hawker centres, bars on Keong Saik Road; the best all-round base.
Kampong Glam and BugisSultan Mosque, Haji Lane's cafés, Arab Street textiles; young and central.
Little IndiaTekka market, temples, late-night shops on Serangoon Road; cheaper rooms, loud on Sundays.
Marina Bay and OrchardBig hotels and malls; convenient, pricey, no street life.

Chinatown, Tanjong Pagar or Kampong Glam for walking and food; Orchard Road only for shopping, and Sentosa only for a resort weekend.

Unusual things

  • ◦Pulau Ubin, a kampong island reached by bumboat from Changi Point, cycled on dirt tracks to the Chek Jawa wetlands.
  • ◦Haw Par Villa, a 1930s theme park of Chinese mythology with the Ten Courts of Hell dioramas, on the Circle line.
  • ◦Gillman Barracks' galleries in old army buildings, and the Southern Ridges walk beyond them.

Day trips

Johor BahruBus or train across the Causeway, about 1 hour with immigration — Malaysian food and prices; the border queues can double the time on weekends.
BintanFerry from Tanah Merah, about 1 hour — Indonesian beach resorts and a slower pace; an overnight works better.
SentosaMonorail or cable car, 15 minutes — Beaches, Universal Studios and the aquarium; artificial and fine for families.
