Ohrid
You can be here in November for about €383, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Shoulder season in November: 13°C days, 15 rainy days, fares below average.
June and September give warm water without the peak crowds from the Balkans and beyond, when the beaches south of town are packed and the old-town streets are a single queue. The Ohrid Summer Festival brings concerts to the ancient theatre and the churches in the middle of that season.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Ohrid is a small stone town on a very old lake, with Byzantine churches on the hill and a promenade of cafés and fish restaurants below. It suits people who want a slow week of swimming, monasteries and grilled trout; the old town is genuinely beautiful and, in high summer, genuinely full.
What you can do
- 01Walk from the Upper Gate through the old town to the Church of St John at Kaneo, then swim below it.
- 02See the frescoes of St Sophia and the icons in the gallery by the Church of the Virgin Peribleptos.
- 03Take a boat to the Monastery of St Naum at the southern end of the lake and the springs behind it.
- 04Eat Ohrid trout or grilled koran, with shopska salad and a glass of Tikveš wine, on the water.
- 05Climb to Samuel's Fortress at sunset for the walls and the view across to Albania.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A guesthouse in the old town for a first visit; the eastern-shore villages are better for families who want to swim from the door. Avoid the summer weekends around the festival if you dislike crowds.
Unusual things
- ◦The Bay of Bones, a reconstructed prehistoric pile-dwelling village on the water at Gradište, with a small museum.
- ◦The Plaošnik excavations beside the reconstructed church of St Clement, where the Slavic alphabet's teachers worked.
- ◦Galičica National Park's road over the mountain to Prespa, with a viewpoint of both lakes at once.
