Los Angeles
You can be here in May for about €1,754, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in May: 24°C days, dry, sea 17°C.
Autumn brings the clearest skies and warm sea, while late spring often sits under the marine layer known as June Gloom; the winter rains are short and the hills turn green. Awards season and studio events clog the west side in general terms, and summer weekends fill every beach car park by ten.
Best months here: September, October, November. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Los Angeles is a hundred small towns held together by freeways, and it only makes sense once you stop looking for a centre: a morning in Koreatown, an afternoon in Venice, a canyon hike, tacos from a truck at midnight. It suits people who like driving, food and light, and frustrates anyone hoping to see it on foot in three days.
What you can do
- 01Hike Griffith Park to the Observatory at dusk, then look down on the basin lighting up toward the sea.
- 02Spend a morning at the Getty Center, free but for parking, for the gardens and the view as much as the art.
- 03Eat tacos al pastor in Boyle Heights, Korean barbecue in Koreatown and a burger at an In-N-Out drive-through.
- 04Walk the Venice canals and boardwalk early, then cycle the beach path north to Santa Monica pier.
- 05Take the Metro to Downtown for the Broad, Disney Hall, Grand Central Market and the Bradbury Building's lobby.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Pick a side and stay there: Santa Monica or Venice for the beach, Silver Lake or Los Feliz for the east side; Hollywood Boulevard hotels are cheap for a reason.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City, a cabinet of curiosities where the line between fact and invention is the exhibit.
- ◦Watts Towers, Simon Rodia's steel-and-mosaic spires built alone over thirty years, seen on guided tours.
- ◦Angels Flight, the short funicular on Bunker Hill, and the Last Bookstore's shelves a few blocks away.

- Getting around
- Rent a car unless you are content to stay in one district; the Metro rail lines are improving and link Downtown, Santa Monica, Hollywood and Pasadena. LAX has a Metro connection at the C Line via shuttle, but a ride to most areas takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.

Good to know
Wildfire and mudslide season can close the coast highway and canyon roads; check conditions before driving to Malibu or the mountains.
