Svalbard
You can be here in March for about €2,090, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in March: -12°C days, snow season.
There are three separate seasons here: polar night with aurora and nothing else, the spring light season for snowmobiles and dog sleds, and the short summer for boats and walking on bare tundra. Pick the activity first and the month follows; the mid-season in between, when the snow rots and the fjords are still frozen, is the one to avoid.
Best months here: March, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago run by Norway where the settlement of Longyearbyen, about 2,400 people, sits at the edge of a glaciated wilderness with more polar bears than residents. It is not a scenic town; it is a base for boats, snowmobiles and guided walks, and it suits people who accept that everything outside the settlement needs a guide and a rifle.
What you can do
- 01Take a boat to Pyramiden, the abandoned Soviet mining town, with a Lenin bust and a hotel that still serves lunch.
- 02Visit the Svalbard Museum by the university for the whaling, trapping and mining history that explains why anyone lives here.
- 03Ride a dog sled outside town, on wheels in summer, on snow from late winter.
- 04Walk up Platåberget or Sarkofagen with a guide for the view over Adventfjorden and the coal-mine remains.
- 05Eat reindeer or Arctic char at Huset, then see Mine 3 on its guided tour of the underground works.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the centre if you want to walk to dinner and the boat quay; Nybyen is quieter and cheaper but a long dark walk in winter. Book months ahead for the light season.
Unusual things
- ◦The Svalbard Global Seed Vault entrance, a concrete wedge in the hillside by the airport; no entry, but it is visible from the road.
- ◦Camp Barentz beyond the town limits, where an evening of stories around the fire takes place inside a polar-bear-safe fence.
- ◦The Svalbard Church, open day and night, with a lounge, coffee and a view over the town from the hill.

Good to know
Polar night lasts from late October to mid-February, and leaving the settlement without a guide or a firearm is both dangerous and against local rules because of polar bears.
