Casablanca
You can be here in December for about €686, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in December: 19°C days.
The city runs on a working week, so downtown is at its best on weekdays and the Corniche on weekends, and there is no real high season, which keeps hotel prices and moods steady all year. The Atlantic keeps summer bearable; winter is mild but wet.
Best months here: September, October, November. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Casablanca is Morocco's working city rather than its postcard: a port and business capital of Art Deco boulevards, traffic and a shoreline mosque built on a scale nothing else in the country matches. It suits people who like to watch a country going about its day and will trade souks for a good fish lunch and a tram ride; the film was shot in Hollywood and the medina is small.
What you can do
- 01Take the guided tour of the Hassan II Mosque, one of few in Morocco open to non-Muslims; tours run several times daily.
- 02Walk Boulevard Mohammed V for the 1930s Art Deco facades, then Place Mohammed V's fountains and the old post office.
- 03Buy fish at the Marché Central and have one of the surrounding restaurants grill it for lunch.
- 04Browse the Habous quarter, a French-planned 'new medina' from the 1920s, for bookshops and pastries from Bennis.
- 05End the day on the Corniche at Ain Diab, where the city walks, eats and swims when the weather allows.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Gauthier or the Art Deco centre for restaurants and the tram; the Corniche hotels suit a beach mood but mean taxis to everything else. Avoid rooms on the port road.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museum of Moroccan Judaism in the Oasis district, the only museum of its kind in the Arab world, in a former orphanage.
- ◦Musée Abderrahman Slaoui, a private collection of vintage posters, jewellery and ceramics in a townhouse near the Parc de la Ligue Arabe.
- ◦Derb Ghallef, a vast flea market of electronics, furniture and counterfeit everything, best visited with someone who knows it.

Pickpocketing on the tram and around the old medina is the main issue; keep phones out of sight near the port after dark.
