Why now

Good time in October: 16°C days, 13 rainy days, fares below average.

Summer is the season the city is built for, when the lake baths and river 'Badis' open and evenings stretch along the quays; the rest of the year it is a museum-and-restaurant city. Trade fairs and the spring Sechseläuten week push hotel rates up sharply.

Best months here: February, September, December. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Zurich: Scenic view of Zurich's historic buildings along the Limmat River, capturing Swiss architectural charm.

Zurich is a banking city that behaves like a lake resort in summer: people swim in the Limmat on their lunch break, trams run to the minute, and the old town along Niederdorf is smaller and gentler than the money suggests. It suits a short, orderly stay, and works better as a base for the mountains than as a week-long destination in itself.

What you can do

  1. 01Swim at Frauenbad Stadthausquai or Oberer Letten, then dry off with a drink at the same bar in the evening.
  2. 02See the Chagall windows in Fraumünster and the Giacometti windows in Grossmünster, a five-minute walk apart.
  3. 03Ride the Polybahn funicular up to the ETH terrace for the standard view of the old town and the lake.
  4. 04Spend a rainy afternoon at the Kunsthaus, whose Chipperfield extension holds the Bührle collection and the Giacometti rooms.
  5. 05Walk the Freitag tower and Viadukt arches in Zürich-West, the old industrial quarter turned shops and restaurants.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Altstadt and NiederdorfCobbled lanes on the right bank, the guild houses and most of the tourist restaurants; convenient and quiet at night.
Kreis 4 (Langstrasse)The former red-light street, now bars, kebab shops and late nights; cheaper rooms, some rough edges.
Zürich-West (Kreis 5)Converted factories, the Schiffbau theatre, Frau Gerolds Garten; ten minutes by tram from the main station.
SeefeldLeafy and residential along the lake's east shore, with the Utoquai baths; expensive and calm.

Stay near the Hauptbahnhof or in Niederdorf for a first visit; Zürich-West if you want evenings. The airport hotels are a poor trade for saving twelve minutes of train.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Cabaret Voltaire on Spiegelgasse, where Dada started in 1916, still open as a small bar and event space.
  • ◦Museum Rietberg in Villa Wesendonck, a non-European art collection in a park where Wagner once lodged.
  • ◦The Uetliberg, reached by the S10 train in twenty minutes, for a ridge walk to Felsenegg and the cable car down to Adliswil.

Day trips

LucerneTrain from the Hauptbahnhof, about 45 minutes, twice an hour — The Chapel Bridge, the lake and, with time, the boat and cogwheel railway to Pilatus.
Rhine Falls at SchaffhausenTrain to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall, about an hour — Europe's largest waterfall by volume; noisy, crowded in summer, worth an hour and the boat to the rock.
RapperswilBoat from Bürkliplatz, about two hours, or train in 40 minutes — Castle, rose gardens and the long wooden footbridge across the lake to Hurden.
