Why now

Good time in October: 16°C days, fares below average.

Late spring and early autumn are the beer garden months, and the Oktoberfest, mostly in late September, fills every bed at double the rate; avoid it or commit to it. Winter brings the Christmas markets and the ski trains, and many beer gardens close from the first cold days.

Best months here: May, June, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Munich is a rich, orderly southern city with beer gardens under chestnut trees, three world-class art museums in one district and the Alps visible on a clear day from the Olympic tower. It is Bavarian first and German second, conservative in dress and generous with the portions, and it runs on time. It suits people who like to combine museums with a lake or a mountain the next morning.

What you can do

  1. 01Spend a morning in the Alte Pinakothek, Dürer and Rubens, then the Pinakothek der Moderne across the road.
  2. 02Drink a Maß in the Hirschgarten or under the Chinese Tower in the English Garden, bringing your own food.
  3. 03Watch the surfers on the Eisbach wave at the edge of the English Garden.
  4. 04Eat Weisswurst before noon at the Viktualienmarkt, with sweet mustard and a pretzel.
  5. 05Take the S-Bahn to Starnberg and swim in the lake, or the train to Garmisch for the Zugspitze.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

AltstadtMarienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Viktualienmarkt; central and convenient, with hotels priced for it.
GlockenbachviertelBars, cafés, small shops along the Isar; the liveliest evenings and the first-visit base.
MaxvorstadtThe museum quarter and the university; student cafés, quiet nights, walkable to everything.
HaidhausenAcross the Isar from the centre, village-like squares and beer halls; calm, well connected.

Stay in the Glockenbachviertel, Maxvorstadt or Haidhausen; the streets south of the Hauptbahnhof are convenient but dispiriting.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Alpine Museum on the Praterinsel in the Isar, run by the German Alpine Club, with a garden.
  • ◦The Villa Stuck in Bogenhausen, a painter's Jugendstil house with its original interiors.
  • ◦The Flaucher, the gravel banks of the Isar in the south of the city, where people swim and grill in summer.

Day trips

Neuschwanstein and FüssenTrain to Füssen, about 2 hours, then bus — Ludwig II's castle, booked well ahead; the Marienbrücke view is the real point, and the queues are real.
Dachau memorialS-Bahn S2, about 25 minutes, then bus 726 — The first concentration camp, kept as a memorial site; allow half a day and go prepared.
TegernseeTrain from Hauptbahnhof, about an hour — A lake with a brewery in the former monastery and hills to walk from the shore.
