Marseille
You can be here in April for about €998, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in April: 18°C days, sea 15°C.
May, June, September and October are the months for the calanques, which close to walkers on high fire-risk days from June through September and are checked day by day. The mistral can blow for three days at any season and turns the harbour white; bouillabaisse is a winter dish in practice.
Best months here: June, July, September. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Marseille is a port first and a French city second, loud, sun-bleached, multi-ethnic and unbothered by what Paris thinks. Its rough edges are real but so is the geography: limestone calanques with turquoise inlets start inside the city limits, and the ferry to the islands leaves from the old harbour. It suits people who like cities with an argument in them and swim off rocks rather than sand.
What you can do
- 01Walk from Luminy into the Calanque de Sugiton and swim, starting early; check the access site first.
- 02Take the ferry from the Vieux-Port to the Frioul islands and the Château d'If.
- 03Climb to Notre-Dame de la Garde for the view, then come down through Le Panier to the MuCEM.
- 04Eat a panisse or a pizza from a truck at the Vallon des Auffes, then bouillabaisse at Chez Fonfon.
- 05Buy sardines, olives and spices at the Marché de Noailles, then walk the Cours Julien's painted streets.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay around the Vieux-Port, Le Panier or the Cours Julien; avoid the immediate surroundings of Saint-Charles station and the northern districts at night for a first visit.
Unusual things
- ◦The Cité Radieuse, Le Corbusier's 1952 housing block, with a hotel, a rooftop and a restaurant open to visitors.
- ◦The Musée d'Histoire de Marseille on the old Greek harbour, with excavated docks and a Roman ship in the basement.
- ◦Bus 83 along the corniche to the Anse de la Fausse Monnaie and the beach at the Prophète, a local swim spot.
