Essaouira
You can be here in March for about €495, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in March: 21°C days, sea 17°C.
The trade wind blows hardest in summer, which is why the beach is for kiting rather than sunbathing then; spring and autumn are calmer and the medina is not full. The Gnaoua music festival packs every room for a few days each year.
Best months here: September, October, November. March is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Essaouira is a walled 18th-century port with a permanent wind, a working fishing harbour and a medina laid out on a grid, which makes it the easiest Moroccan old town to walk without getting lost. It suits people who want Morocco at a lower volume than Marrakech, and kitesurfers who want the wind.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Skala de la Ville ramparts at sunset, cannons pointing at the Atlantic, then down into the medina.
- 02Eat grilled sardines at the fish stalls between the harbour and the Place Moulay Hassan.
- 03Take a kite or surf lesson on the beach south of town, where the wind is reliable.
- 04Browse the thuya-wood workshops under the ramparts and the argan cooperatives outside the walls.
- 05Ride or walk the beach south to the ruined Bordj El Berod fort and the dunes at Diabat.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in a medina riad for a first visit, ideally not on a lane with a late café; the beachfront hotels are for families and kite trips.
Unusual things
- ◦Sidi Kaouki, a surf village 25 km south with a beach, a marabout tomb and almost nothing else.
- ◦The old Portuguese church behind the Bab Sbaa gate and the Simon Attias synagogue, restored as a small museum.
- ◦The Mogador islands offshore, a nesting site for Eleonora's falcons, visible from the harbour but closed to landing.

Good to know
The wind is constant and the sea is cold with rips; the beach is for walking and kiting more than swimming for most of the year.
