Djerba
You can be here in November for about €813, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in November: 24°C days, dry, sea 22°C, fares below average.
Spring and autumn give warm sea and empty roads; summer is hot and crowded with Tunisian and European families, and winter is mild but the sea is cold and some resorts close. The Lag BaOmer pilgrimage to the Ghriba synagogue fills the island in late spring.
Best months here: May, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Djerba is a flat, low island off Tunisia's south coast joined to the mainland by a Roman causeway, with olive groves, whitewashed mosques with no minarets, a resort zone on the northeast beaches and an old Jewish community at Er Riadh. Houmt Souk, the main town, is small and easy. It suits people after winter sun with some texture, and it is the base for the Berber south and the desert edge.
What you can do
- 01Walk Houmt Souk's fondouks and covered market in the morning, then eat grilled fish by the fish auction.
- 02Visit the El Ghriba synagogue at Er Riadh, one of the oldest in Africa, and the Djerbahood street art around it.
- 03Cycle the flat lanes between the villages, past the menzel farmsteads and the fortress mosques.
- 04Swim from the Sidi Mahrez beaches early, before the resort crowds and the horses arrive.
- 05Cross to the mainland for the ksour and the troglodyte homes of Matmata and Tataouine.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in a Houmt Souk fondouk or an Er Riadh guesthouse for the island; the Zone Touristique is for beach holidays where the hotel is the point.
Unusual things
- ◦Guellala's pottery workshops and museum on the island's south, where the clay is still dug locally.
- ◦The Borj El Kebir fort on Houmt Souk's shore, with the site of the Ottoman-era skull tower marked outside.
- ◦The Lalla Hadria museum near Midoun, a private collection of Islamic art in a sprawling park complex.

Good to know
The island is calm, but most governments advise against travel near the Libyan border and the southern desert beyond Tataouine; check before planning long drives south.
