Budapest
You can be here in October for about €667, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 17°C days, fares below average.
Late spring and early autumn are the easy seasons for the outdoor baths and the Danube terraces; summer is hot and the Sziget festival week fills every bed in August. Winter is grey but Széchenyi's outdoor pools steam in the cold and the opera season runs.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Budapest is two cities: Buda's hills, castle and villas on the west bank, and Pest's flat grid of Habsburg-era boulevards, ruin bars and thermal baths on the east. It is grand, slightly faded and cheap to eat in, and suits people who want architecture by day and baths or bars by night without much planning.
What you can do
- 01Bathe at Széchenyi in the morning or Rudas late on a weekend night, when the Ottoman pool opens after dark.
- 02Walk the Castle District early, then take the Sikló funicular down and cross the Chain Bridge.
- 03See the Parliament's guided tour and the Shoes on the Danube memorial along the embankment.
- 04Eat at the Great Market Hall's upper floor at lunchtime, then walk Ráday utca for dinner.
- 05Spend an evening in the ruin bars of the Jewish Quarter, starting with Szimpla Kert before it fills.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in District VI or V for a first visit; District VII if the nightlife is the point and you can sleep through it. The Buda side is quieter but more walking to the evenings.
Unusual things
- ◦The Hospital in the Rock under Castle Hill, a wartime hospital turned Cold War nuclear bunker, waxworks included.
- ◦Memento Park on the southern edge, where the Soviet statues were moved rather than melted.
- ◦The Kerepesi cemetery's mausoleums and Communist pantheon, a 20-minute walk from Keleti station.

Good to know
Overcharging taxis and bill-padding bars along Váci utca are the common scams; use an app for taxis and check menus for a service charge already included.
