Why now

Good time in October: 21°C days, 13 rainy days, fares below average.

Late spring and September to October coincide with vineyard tours and the harvest, when the châteaux are busiest and need booking. Summer is hot and humid on the river and many city restaurants close for part of August; the Fête le Vin on the quays every other June fills hotels.

Best months here: July, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Bordeaux is an 18th-century city of pale limestone on a bend in the Garonne, cleaned and pedestrianised over the last twenty years until it looks like its own postcard. The wine is the reason most people come, but the city works on its own terms, with a tram system, a two-kilometre riverside walk and a market-led food scene. It suits people who want a handsome base for the vineyards and the Atlantic and do not need hills.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk the quays from the Place de la Bourse and its Miroir d'Eau to the Chartrons, then back through the old town.
  2. 02Visit the Cité du Vin in Bacalan, a half day with a tasting on top; tram B stops outside.
  3. 03Eat oysters and canelés at the Marché des Capucins on Saturday morning.
  4. 04Take a booked half-day tour to Saint-Émilion's cellars, or the train and a walk between the vines.
  5. 05Climb the Tour Pey-Berland for the view over the cathedral and the slate roofs.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Saint-Pierre and the old townThe 18th-century core between the cathedral and the river; central, pedestrian, loud on weekend nights.
ChartronsThe old wine merchants' quarter, antiques and cafés on the Rue Notre-Dame; calmer, a 15-minute walk from the centre.
Saint-MichelAround the basilica and its flea market, a mixed working quarter with the Capucins market; cheaper, lively.
Bacalan and the Bassins à FlotDocklands with the Cité du Vin and the Bassins des Lumières; new hotels, tram-dependent.

Stay in Saint-Pierre or the Chartrons for a first visit; the streets around the Saint-Jean station are convenient but unlovely.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Bassins des Lumières, an immersive art projection space inside a Second World War submarine pen.
  • ◦The Musée d'Aquitaine's Roman and Atlantic-trade collections, quieter than the wine-focused sights.
  • ◦The Darwin ecosystem on the right bank, a former barracks turned skate park, organic canteen and street-art site.

Day trips

Saint-ÉmilionTrain, about 35 minutes, then a 20-minute walk from the station — The monolithic church and the vineyards on foot; crowded by lunchtime on weekends.
Arcachon and the Dune du PilatTrain, about 50 minutes, then bus to the dune — Oysters in the Cap Ferret cabins across the bay and a climb up Europe's tallest sand dune.
Médoc châteauxCar or booked tour, about an hour north — The classified growths of Pauillac and Margaux; visits are by appointment, not walk-in.
