Ålesund
You can be here in October for about €1,063, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Off season in October: 10°C days, 22 rainy days, fares below average.
The Geiranger road passes and the Trollstigen are closed by snow for much of the year and reopen in late spring; the fjord ferry runs a summer timetable. Midsummer brings the cruise crowds and the long light; early autumn keeps the roads open, empties the viewpoints and turns the birches yellow.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Ålesund was rebuilt in Art Nouveau after the 1904 fire, so the town centre is a coherent set of turreted stone houses across three islands, with fishing boats still tied up in the Brosundet canal. Geiranger is ninety kilometres away by road and ferry and is a different proposition: a fjord at the end of the world that receives cruise ships by the hundred. The pair suits drivers who want a good town base and a long day among the fjords.
What you can do
- 01Climb the 418 steps to Fjellstua on Aksla for the view over the islands and the Sunnmøre Alps.
- 02Walk the Art Nouveau streets between Apotekergata and Kongens gate, then the Jugendstilsenteret museum in the old pharmacy.
- 03Drive or take the bus to Geiranger by the Eagle Road, then the boat past the Seven Sisters waterfall.
- 04Take the ferry to the Atlantic Sea Park at Tueneset, a fjord aquarium built into the shore with outdoor seal pools.
- 05Eat bacalao, the Sunnmøre dish made from Ålesund's own klippfisk, at a restaurant along the Brosundet.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the centre by the Brosundet for a first visit; the airport hotels on Vigra are convenient only for early flights. A night in Geiranger is worth it for the hours before the cruise tenders arrive.
Unusual things
- ◦Alnes lighthouse on Godøya, reached by tunnels and bridges from Ålesund, with a café and surf beach.
- ◦The Skageflå mountain farm above Geirangerfjord, abandoned, reached by boat drop-off and a steep path.
- ◦Sunnmøre Museum's open-air boat collection at Borgundgavlen, on the site of the medieval trading town.

Good to know
Mountain roads including Trollstigen and the Geiranger pass close with snow and sometimes with rockfall; check road status before planning a loop.
