You can be here in October for about €787, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in October: 20°C days, 16 rainy days, fares below average.
Late spring and September are the driest months and the Camino's busiest; July brings the feast of St James and its fireworks, which fill the city. Winter is wet and quiet, with the cathedral and the tapas bars to yourself.
Best months here: June, August, September. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Santiago is a granite pilgrimage city that rains on its pilgrims, with a cathedral square where walkers end their Camino and a food market that treats octopus and scallops as ordinary. It suits people who like old stone, wet weather and long lunches; the arrival of pilgrims each morning is the city's daily event.
What you can do
- 01Watch pilgrims arrive in the Praza do Obradoiro in the morning, then see the Pórtico da Gloria on a booked visit.
- 02Take the cathedral rooftop tour for the view across the old town's granite and the pilgrims' square.
- 03Eat pulpo á feira, padrón peppers and a tarta de Santiago in the bars of Rúa do Franco and Rúa da Raíña.
- 04Walk through the Mercado de Abastos in the morning and have what you bought cooked at a stall inside.
- 05See the Museo do Pobo Galego in the Bonaval convent, with its triple spiral staircase, then the park behind it.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Casco Histórico for a first visit, ideally a converted house with a courtyard; the Ensanche is fine but has none of the stone.
Unusual things
- ◦The Cidade da Cultura, Peter Eisenman's unfinished cultural complex on a hill outside town, a granite landscape with almost nobody in it.
- ◦The Colexiata de Sar, a Romanesque church whose pillars lean alarmingly, ten minutes' walk south of the old town.
- ◦The Pazo de Oca near A Estrada, a manor garden with a stone boat pond and clipped hedges, about 30 minutes by car.
