Why now

Prime time in April: 26°C days.

The cooler months from about October to April are the season, with Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest filling the city and doubling hotel prices in general terms; the weeks between the big festivals are the sweet spot. Hurricane season runs June to November and summer heat empties the streets by afternoon.

Best months here: March, October, November. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

New Orleans is the least American city in America: Creole townhouses, brass bands on the corner, a food culture that runs from po'boys to Creole fine dining, and a rhythm that takes drinking on the street as normal. It suits people who come for music and food and stay up late; it is humid, poor in places, and it does not hide either.

What you can do

  1. 01Hear brass bands and jazz on Frenchmen Street after ten, rather than Bourbon Street's cover bands.
  2. 02Ride the St. Charles streetcar through the Garden District's mansions and get off for a walk under the oaks.
  3. 03Eat beignets at Café du Monde before eight, then gumbo, a fried oyster po'boy and a Sazerac later.
  4. 04Walk the French Quarter's back streets, Royal and Chartres, in the morning while Bourbon sleeps.
  5. 05Take a Second Line parade on a Sunday afternoon if one is running; the routes are posted weekly.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

French QuarterThe historic grid, galleries, courtyards and Bourbon Street's noise; stay on the quieter lower blocks.
Marigny and BywaterPainted shotgun houses, Frenchmen Street's clubs, Crescent Park; the base for music.
Garden District and UptownOaks, mansions, Magazine Street's shops and restaurants; calm, on the streetcar line.
Central Business District and Warehouse DistrictHotels, the National WWII Museum, galleries on Julia Street; convenient and less atmospheric.

Stay in the lower French Quarter or the Marigny for music, the Garden District for quiet and porches; a night on Bourbon Street itself is a mistake.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Backstreet Cultural Museum in Tremé, Mardi Gras Indian suits and Second Line history in a small house.
  • ◦Preservation Hall, an unamplified room in the Quarter with several short sets a night; queue early.
  • ◦The Fair Grounds' Lakeview neighbourhood and Bayou St. John, where locals kayak and picnic under the oaks.

Day trips

Whitney PlantationCar or tour, about 1 hour west along the River Road — The only River Road plantation told from the perspective of the enslaved; sobering and essential.
Barataria Preserve swampCar, about 30 minutes south — Boardwalks through cypress swamp with alligators and egrets; free, better than the boat tours.
Lafayette and Cajun countryCar, about 2.5 hours west — Zydeco dancehalls, boudin and crawfish; best on a Saturday morning with a jam session.

Good to know

Hurricane season runs June to November, and street crime is a real concern outside the busy blocks late at night; take a ride after midnight rather than walking.
