Why now

Prime time in December: 22°C days, dry.

Autumn into early winter is the comfortable stretch; the summer is heavy, wet and interrupted by typhoon rain. The Canton Fair fills the city twice a year and pushes hotel availability to nothing, and around Lunar New Year many family-run restaurants close for a week or more.

Best months here: January, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Guangzhou is a trading city that has been dealing with foreigners for a thousand years and treats them as ordinary. Little of it is picturesque — the old Xiguan shophouse lanes survive in patches between towers — but the food is the reason people come, and morning tea here is a two-hour institution rather than a meal. It suits travellers who plan their day around what they will eat.

What you can do

  1. 01Take morning tea seriously: arrive before nine at Taotaoju or Panxi for dim sum, tea and no hurry.
  2. 02Walk Enning Road and the restored Yongqingfang lanes through Xiguan, then stop for double-skin milk in Liwan.
  3. 03See the carved roof ridges of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and the jade burial suit at the Nanyue King museum.
  4. 04Cross to Shamian Island for the old concession buildings and banyan avenues, a short walk from Shangxiajiu.
  5. 05Ride the metro to Zhujiang New Town at dusk and look back at Canton Tower across the river.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Liwan (Xiguan)Old Canton: shophouse lanes, teahouses, dessert shops and the best eating; low-rise and best explored on foot.
YuexiuTemples, Yuexiu Park, Beijing Road and the main museums; central, mixed, well connected by metro.
Tianhe & Zhujiang New TownTowers, malls, the opera house and most international hotels; convenient and characterless.
HaizhuAcross the river, with the Pazhou fair complex at one end and quiet residential streets at the other.

Stay in Yuexiu or Liwan to be near the old city and the food, or Tianhe if you need the business district; the airport hotels are a long metro ride from anything.

Unusual things

  • ◦Bruce Lee's ancestral family house, a small grey-brick residence among the Yongqingfang lanes off Enning Road.
  • ◦Huaisheng Mosque on Guangta Road, founded in the Tang dynasty, with a plain minaret that once guided river traffic.
  • ◦The trading quarter around Baohan Zhijie in Xiaobei, with West African and Yemeni restaurants; much reduced since the pandemic but still there.

Day trips

FoshanGuangfo metro line, about an hour — The Zumiao ancestral temple, Cantonese opera and lion dance, and Nanfeng's centuries-old dragon kiln.
Kaiping DiaolouHigh-speed train to Kaiping, then taxi; about two hours in total — Fortified watchtowers built by returning emigrants, mixing Chinese village form with borrowed European detail.
Hong KongHigh-speed train from Guangzhou South to West Kowloon, about 50 minutes — Straightforward as an outing, but returning to the mainland needs a visa that allows re-entry.

Good to know

Payment is effectively cashless — set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before arriving, as many small restaurants no longer handle notes. Typhoon rain in late summer can shut transport and flights for a day at a time.
