Why now

Good time in March: 20°C days, 26 rainy days.

Sundays are the day to be here, when the Ciclovía closes over 100 km of roads to cars and the museums are free, so plan the trip around one. Colombia's many long weekends empty the city and jam the roads out of it, which makes them good for the centre and bad for day trips.

Best months here: January, September, October. March is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Bogotá is a cool, grey Andean capital at 2,640 metres that most people underrate on arrival and miss when they leave: brick apartment blocks, eucalyptus hills, a colonial core of museums and student cafés, and a food and coffee scene that has outgrown its reputation. It suits people who like cities that work on a weekday, not a resort; bring a jacket and take the first day slowly.

What you can do

  1. 01Ride the funicular up Monserrate early on a clear morning; the walking path is for pilgrims and the acclimatised.
  2. 02Spend a morning in the Museo del Oro, then walk two blocks to the Botero collection in the Banco de la República museums.
  3. 03Eat ajiaco with capers and cream at lunch, and chocolate con queso at La Puerta Falsa, open since 1816.
  4. 04Cycle the Sunday Ciclovía up Carrera Séptima, then eat and browse the flea market in Usaquén.
  5. 05Go to Paloquemao market before eight for the flower hall and fruit you have never heard of: lulo, feijoa, granadilla.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

La CandelariaThe colonial core with the museums, universities and cheap rooms; lively by day, quiet and best not walked alone late.
Chapinero AltoHillside streets of cafés, bakeries and the Zona G restaurants; the sensible base for a first visit.
Zona T and ChicóMalls, chain hotels and the nightlife strip; safe, well connected, somewhat interchangeable.
UsaquénA former village absorbed by the city, with a Sunday market and good restaurants; calm, but 45 minutes from the centre in traffic.

Stay in Chapinero Alto or around the Zona G for cafés and restaurants within walking distance; La Candelaria is right for the museums if you take taxis after dark, and the Zona T suits anyone who wants a familiar chain hotel.

Unusual things

  • ◦Cementerio Central, where the statue of brewer Leo Kopp is petitioned for favours and presidents lie in Art Deco tombs; weekend tours run.
  • ◦Chorro de Quevedo, the tiny plaza where the city is said to have been founded, now ringed by bars serving chicha from jugs.
  • ◦A tejo hall in Chapinero, where the national game is played by throwing steel discs at clay targets fitted with gunpowder caps.

Day trips

ZipaquiráTransMilenio to Portal Norte then bus, about 1 hour 30 minutes; or the weekend tourist train — A cathedral carved 180 metres down inside a salt mine; the smaller Nemocón mine nearby is quieter and less theatrical.
Laguna de GuatavitaCar, about 2 hours — The crater lake behind the El Dorado legend, visited on a guided walk; combine it with the rebuilt lakeside town of Guatavita.
Villa de LeyvaBus from Terminal del Norte, 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours — An enormous cobbled plaza, fossil museums and whitewashed streets; too far for a day, right for one night.

Getting around
TransMilenio buses are fast and very crowded; app rides are the normal way to cross the city, and traffic is bad enough that 10 km can take an hour. El Dorado airport is in the west, 30 to 60 minutes by taxi depending on the hour; the metro is still under construction.

Good to know

The altitude tires most people on the first day, so go easy on alcohol and hills; keep phones out of sight on the street, and book taxis by app rather than hailing them at night.
