Why now

Prime time in September: 22°C days.

Summer is the season the city is built for, with beer gardens, open-air cinemas and lakes reachable by S-Bahn; the film festival in winter, the marathon and the big trade fairs spike hotel rates for a week at a time. Note that the Pergamon Museum is closed for renovation for years, so plan Museum Island around the Neues Museum instead.

Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Berlin is a city of gaps: bombed, divided, half-rebuilt, and still with empty lots between Prussian tenements and prefab slabs where something temporary is always happening. It carries more twentieth-century history per street than anywhere in Europe and wears it with a hangover, a döner and a lake swim. It suits people who like to spend a whole day in one district and do not need a beautiful skyline to feel they have arrived.

What you can do

  1. 01Start with the Wall at the Bernauer Strasse memorial, where a full stretch of the death strip survives, rather than Checkpoint Charlie.
  2. 02See Nefertiti in the Neues Museum and the Caspar David Friedrich rooms in the Alte Nationalgalerie, booked for opening time.
  3. 03Register in advance for the Reichstag dome, then walk the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial's stelae afterwards.
  4. 04Cycle the old runways of Tempelhofer Feld, then eat on Sonnenallee in Neukölln, the Arabic and Turkish high street.
  5. 05Take the S-Bahn to Schlachtensee or Wannsee on a hot day and swim from the shore, as the city does.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

MitteMuseum Island, galleries around Torstrasse, most of the hotels; central and efficient, blander after dark than the districts south and east.
KreuzbergTurkish market on the Maybachufer, canal walks, bars along Oranienstrasse; the base for nights out and long café mornings.
Prenzlauer BergRestored tenements, the Kollwitzplatz market, prams and quiet streets; calm and pretty, for a first visit that ends before midnight.
NeuköllnReuterkiez and Schillerkiez bars, bakeries, Tempelhofer Feld at the end of the street; younger and rougher-edged, cheaper rooms.

Stay in Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg for a first visit, in Mitte if the museums are the point and the nights short, in Charlottenburg for old West Berlin calm. Alexanderplatz is a transport hub, not a neighbourhood.

Unusual things

  • ◦Teufelsberg, the abandoned Cold War listening station on a rubble hill in the Grunewald, its radomes now covered in graffiti.
  • ◦Berliner Unterwelten tours from Gesundbrunnen station into wartime bunkers and the tunnels dug under the Wall.
  • ◦The Stasi Museum in Lichtenberg, the ministry's own headquarters with Erich Mielke's offices left exactly as they were.

Day trips

PotsdamS7 or regional train, 30 to 40 minutes — Sanssouci's terraces and palaces, the Dutch Quarter and Cecilienhof, where the 1945 conference was held.
Sachsenhausen MemorialS1 to Oranienburg, about 45 minutes, then a 20-minute walk or bus — The camp that served as the model for the others; go with time and a quiet afternoon afterwards.
Spreewald (Lübbenau)Regional train, about an hour — Forest canals punted by pole, Sorbian villages and pickled gherkins; busy on summer weekends.

Good to know

Validate paper tickets before boarding, since plain-clothes inspectors fine on the spot, and give Görlitzer Park a miss after dark.
