You can be here in July for about €1,251, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Shoulder season in July: 36°C days, dry, sea 27°C.
March to May and October to early November are the walking months; in July and August the Acropolis closes in the afternoon heat on the worst days and the city empties to the islands. Around Orthodox Easter the centre is quiet and half the restaurants shut.
Best months here: September, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Athens is a concrete city of four million with a marble hill in the middle, and it takes a day to stop resenting the concrete and start liking the balconies, the ouzeries and the way every street ends in a view of the Acropolis. It suits people who want antiquity in the morning, a long lunch, and neighbourhoods that get better after dark, and who are not expecting a pretty town.
What you can do
- 01Go up the Acropolis at opening with a timed ticket, then spend the heat of the day in the Acropolis Museum.
- 02Walk from the Ancient Agora through Monastiraki to Kerameikos, the cemetery that tour groups skip.
- 03Eat souvlaki standing up in Monastiraki, then a proper lunch at a taverna in Psyrri or Petralona.
- 04Take the metro to Piraeus and a morning ferry to Aegina for pistachios and the Temple of Aphaia.
- 05Climb Lycabettus or Filopappou hill at sunset; the second is free and closer to the Parthenon.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should stay in Koukaki or Plaka for the sites, Psyrri for the nights; Omonia is central but rough after dark, and Syntagma's large hotels are convenient and characterless.
Unusual things
- ◦The Tower of the Winds in the Roman Agora, a 2nd-century BC water clock with the eight wind gods carved on it.
- ◦The Athens First Cemetery in Mets, with Halepas's Sleeping Maiden and the tombs of the 19th-century city.
- ◦The Stavros Niarchos Foundation park at Kallithea, Piano's library and opera house on a sloping green roof.
