Yogyakarta
You can be here in December for about €823, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in December: 31°C days, 24 rainy days.
The dry months are clearer for sunrise over Borobudur and for Merapi; the rains bring afternoon storms and fewer visitors. Indonesian school holidays and long weekends fill the temples with domestic groups, and Ramadan changes eating hours.
Best months here: May, June, July. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Yogyakarta is a sultanate inside a republic, a student city of batik workshops, becak drivers and gudeg stalls that also happens to sit between Borobudur and Prambanan, two of the largest religious monuments in Asia. It suits people who like a town with its own rhythm and who will get up at four for a temple.
What you can do
- 01See Borobudur at first light from the Punthuk Setumbu hill, then the temple itself with the timed-entry ticket.
- 02Walk Prambanan's Shiva temples late afternoon and stay for the Ramayana ballet on the open-air stage.
- 03Eat gudeg, jackfruit stewed in coconut, at Gudeg Yu Djum or a morning stall on Wijilan street.
- 04Visit the Kraton palace in the morning when gamelan or dance is performed, then the Taman Sari water castle.
- 05Buy batik from a workshop in Kampung Batik Giriloyo or Tirtodipuran rather than the Malioboro touts.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Prawirotaman for a first visit, or a homestay near Borobudur for one night to do the sunrise without the pre-dawn drive; avoid Malioboro for more than a night.
Unusual things
- ◦Ratu Boko, a hilltop palace ruin above Prambanan with a gate framing the sunset and no crowds.
- ◦Plaosan and Sewu temples, Buddhist complexes near Prambanan included on the same ticket and mostly ignored.
- ◦The Merapi lava tour villages of Kaliadem, jeeps over the 2010 eruption's ash fields and a bunker.
