Tbilisi
You can be here in March for about €642, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in March: 15°C days.
Autumn is the time: the Kakheti grape harvest, the city festival, and cooler streets after a summer when many locals leave the heat. Spring brings tarragon-heavy dishes like chakapuli and green hills for the day trips; winter is short, grey and cheap, with skiing at Gudauri two hours away.
Best months here: June, September, October. March is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Tbilisi is a river city of carved wooden balconies, painted stairwells and sulphur steam, where a Persian-looking old town sits under a fortress and the nineteenth-century avenues above it still have Soviet bones. It suits people who eat and drink seriously and do not mind steps, cracked pavements or a supra that runs past midnight.
What you can do
- 01Book a private room at the Orbeliani baths in Abanotubani, sulphur water and a rough scrub included.
- 02Eat khinkali by hand, holding the knot, then order Adjaruli khachapuri and share it; no cutlery needed.
- 03Ride the cable car from Rike Park to Narikala fortress and walk down through the botanical garden.
- 04Browse the Dry Bridge market on a weekend morning: Soviet cameras, enamel pins, old carpets, mostly genuine.
- 05See the Colchian gold and the Soviet Occupation hall at the National Museum on Rustaveli Avenue.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Sololaki or Vera for a first visit, close to Rustaveli and the old town without sleeping among its bars; the guesthouses around Freedom Square are central and loud.
Unusual things
- ◦The Chronicle of Georgia, a set of sixteen 30-metre columns by Zurab Tsereteli above the Tbilisi Sea, unfinished and rarely visited.
- ◦Stalin's underground printing house, a museum in a cellar reached by a well shaft, still run by the local communist party.
- ◦The former Ministry of Highways in Saburtalo, a 1975 building of stacked concrete bridges, now a bank and viewable from outside.

Good to know
Demonstrations gather on Rustaveli Avenue outside Parliament from time to time and are usually peaceful; check local news and give the crowds room.
