Why now

Prime time in January: 30°C days, dry.

Temple visits are governed by heat more than by season: the dry months from November to March are cooler and busy, the green season brings rain in the afternoons but full moats, empty galleries and lower humidity in the mornings. Multi-day passes make a slower rhythm possible.

Best months here: January, February, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Siem Reap is a small provincial town that exists, for most visitors, as the base for Angkor: the temples are the point, and the town is where you eat and sleep between them. It suits people willing to get up before dawn, cycle in heat, and give the ruins more than the standard one-day loop; the Pub Street strip is the price you pay.

What you can do

  1. 01Watch sunrise at Angkor Wat from the western causeway, then leave the crowds behind by walking the bas-relief galleries.
  2. 02Spend a full morning in Angkor Thom: the Bayon's faces, the Terrace of the Elephants, then Baphuon's stepped pyramid.
  3. 03Cycle the small circuit at dawn, stopping at Ta Prohm before the tour buses arrive after eight.
  4. 04Take a tuk-tuk out to Banteay Srei for its pink sandstone carving, continuing to the river carvings at Kbal Spean.
  5. 05Eat fish amok and grilled river fish at the Old Market, then walk the riverside to the Wat Bo pagodas.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Old Market (Psar Chas)The central grid around Pub Street; noisy at night, convenient, best for short stays and first visits.
Wat BoAcross the river from the market: quieter lanes, guesthouses, small restaurants; the sensible middle choice.
Wat DamnakSouth of the centre near the pagoda; residential, a few boutique hotels, ten minutes' walk to the market.
Sok San RoadBackpacker hostels and bars west of the market; cheap and lively, not restful.

Stay in Wat Bo or Wat Damnak for quiet nights within walking distance of the market; avoid rooms directly on Pub Street unless you plan to be part of it. Resorts along the airport road are isolated and depend on tuk-tuks.

Unusual things

  • ◦Beng Mealea, a jungle-swallowed temple about 60 km east, largely unrestored and walkable on boardwalks through fallen masonry.
  • ◦The Angkor National Museum's gallery of a thousand Buddha images, useful before the temples for reading what you see.
  • ◦Phare, the Cambodian Circus, a nightly performance by graduates of a Battambang arts school, closer to theatre than to acrobatics.

Day trips

Tonlé Sap floating villages (Kampong Phluk)Tuk-tuk then boat, about 1 hour each way — Stilt houses and flooded forest; better in the wet season, when the lake is high and the boats reach the trees.
Koh Ker and Beng MealeaCar, a full day, about 2.5 hours to Koh Ker — A seven-tier pyramid from a tenth-century capital; empty compared with Angkor, and now easier since the road was paved.
Phnom KulenCar, about 1.5 hours; entry closes to arrivals by late morning — The sacred mountain where the Khmer empire was declared; waterfalls, a reclining Buddha and riverbed carvings.

Good to know

Heat and dehydration are the real hazards at the temples; carry water and rest in the middle of the day.
