San Francisco
You can be here in April for about €2,333, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in April: 16°C days, dry.
September and October are the warm, clear months locals call the real summer, after the fog of June to August and before the winter rains. Big tech conferences fill hotels midweek at scattered times through the year, and weekends are cheaper than in most cities.
Best months here: June, September, October. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

San Francisco is a compact city of steep streets and separate villages on a peninsula that gets fog on one side and sun on the other, sometimes at the same hour. It suits walkers who pack a jacket in August and people who like food and views more than nightlife; its downtown has been hollowed out in recent years and the tenderloin blocks are hard to look at.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Golden Gate Bridge from the Presidio to the Marin side, then back through Crissy Field.
- 02Spend a morning in Golden Gate Park: the de Young's tower, the Japanese Tea Garden, the bison paddock.
- 03Take the ferry to Alcatraz with a ticket booked weeks ahead; the audio tour is better than it sounds.
- 04Eat a Mission burrito on 24th Street, then dim sum in the Richmond on Clement Street.
- 05Ride a Muni streetcar down Market Street to the Ferry Building's food hall on a Saturday market morning.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Mission, Hayes Valley or North Beach for neighbourhood life; Union Square hotels are cheaper than they were and worse to walk out of at night.
Unusual things
- ◦Lands End trail from the Sutro Baths ruins to the Legion of Honor, cliffs and shipwreck views inside the city.
- ◦The Wave Organ, a stone sculpture on a jetty in the Marina that sounds with the tide.
- ◦The Musée Mécanique at Fisherman's Wharf, a working collection of antique coin-operated arcade machines.
