Mumbai
You can be here in October for about €512, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in October: 32°C days, 13 rainy days, fares below average.
The dry months from about November to February are the only comfortable ones; the monsoon from June to September floods streets and stops trains, though the city is greener and cheaper. Ganesh Chaturthi fills the streets with processions and closes roads for ten days at the end of summer.
Best months here: January, November, December. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Mumbai is a narrow island city of twenty million that runs on suburban trains, film money and street food, with Victorian Gothic in the south, mangroves and slums along the creeks, and a sea it keeps its back to. It suits people who enjoy cities for their own sake; there is little to tick off and a great deal to watch.
What you can do
- 01Walk south Mumbai's Fort district: Victoria Terminus, the High Court, the Asiatic Society library, Kala Ghoda's galleries.
- 02Take the ferry from the Gateway of India to Elephanta's rock-cut Shiva temples, an hour across the harbour.
- 03Ride a suburban train off-peak, then eat vada pav at a stall by the station like the commuters do.
- 04Have Parsi breakfast at an Irani café such as Kyani or Britannia: bun maska, akuri, berry pulao.
- 05Walk Marine Drive at dusk from Nariman Point to Chowpatty and eat bhel puri on the sand.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Colaba or Fort for the sights and the old city, or Bandra for evenings and restaurants; do not book near the airport expecting to reach the south easily.
Unusual things
- ◦The Kanheri Caves inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park, over a hundred Buddhist rock cells cut into the hills at the city's northern edge.
- ◦Banganga Tank on Malabar Hill, a stepped temple reservoir older than the city around it, reached through narrow lanes.
- ◦Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Byculla, a restored Victorian hall of the city's crafts and industrial history next to the zoo.
