Why now
Prime time in May: 27°C days, dry, sea 22°C.
March to May and October to November are the months: wildflowers or warm sea, walkable Troodos trails, and a Nicosia not yet at 40 degrees. In July and August the coast fills with families from the UK and Israel and the inland heat is severe; the mountains ski in a good winter.
Best months here: September, October, November. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 34.92°, 33.63°, near Larnaca. Somewhere else in Cyprus the numbers will differ.
The place

Cyprus is a divided island of Byzantine painted churches, British-era road signs, halloumi grilled on every menu and a south coast built for package holidays; Larnaca is its calmer airport town, with a palm-lined seafront and a mosque on a salt lake. It suits people who drive into the Troodos for the churches and villages, cross the Green Line to Nicosia's other half, and treat the resorts as a place to swim rather than to stay.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Finikoudes seafront in Larnaca to the Church of St Lazarus and the Ottoman fort at dusk.
- 02Cross the Ledra Street checkpoint in Nicosia and see both halves of the last divided capital in a day.
- 03Drive into the Troodos for the painted churches at Kakopetria and Asinou and lunch in Kalopanayiotis.
- 04Swim at Konnos bay or Nissi beach in the morning, then the Cape Greco sea caves and trail.
- 05Eat a slow meze in a village taverna, then a coffee in a kafeneio in Lefkara among the lace makers.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should split between Larnaca or Nicosia and a Troodos village; Ayia Napa is for nights out, and Limassol's tower hotels suit business more than pleasure.
Unusual things
- ◦Hala Sultan Tekke, the mosque and shrine on the Larnaca salt lake, with flamingos on the water in winter.
- ◦The Kykkos monastery in the west Troodos, gilt and mosaicked, with Makarios's tomb on the hill above.
- ◦Choirokoitia, a Neolithic round-house village on the road to Limassol, one of the oldest settlements in the Mediterranean.

Good to know
The north is administered by a Turkish Cypriot government recognised only by Turkey; entering Cyprus through northern ports or airports is treated as illegal by the Republic, so arrive in the south and cross by the recognised checkpoints.
