Johannesburg
You can be here in January for about €1,016, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in January: 26°C days.
The Highveld winter is dry, bright and cold after dark, which is also when the game reserves within reach are easiest. Late December empties the city as residents leave for the coast; the arts precincts and restaurants are at their fullest midweek in term time.
Best months here: April, May, September. January is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Johannesburg is a mining town that became a metropolis without ever agreeing on a centre, so it reads as a series of precincts joined by highways. The history is recent enough to still be argued about, and the museums are the best in the country. It suits people who want to understand a place rather than photograph it.
What you can do
- 01Walk Constitution Hill's Old Fort and Number Four prison, then the Constitutional Court built into the same bricks.
- 02Give the Apartheid Museum a full half day; the sequence of the rooms is the argument.
- 03Book a Soweto guide for Vilakazi Street, the Hector Pieterson Museum and Kliptown, not only the photo stops.
- 04Eat lunch at 44 Stanley in Milpark or Victoria Yards in Lorentzville, both converted industrial yards.
- 05Spend a morning at the Origins Centre at Wits on rock art and hominin fossils.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Rosebank or Melville for a first visit, Sandton if meetings dictate; avoid booking in the inner city around Hillbrow or Berea.
Unusual things
- ◦Ponte City in Hillbrow, the hollow 1970s cylinder tower, visited on guided tours run by the local organisation Dlala Nje.
- ◦Satyagraha House in Orchards, where Gandhi lived from 1908, now a small museum and guesthouse.
- ◦The Lindfield Victorian House Museum in Auckland Park, a lived-in period house shown by appointment by its owner.

Good to know
Several governments advise heightened caution over violent crime, including carjacking and smash-and-grab at traffic lights. Keep valuables out of sight in the car, avoid walking after dark, and treat the inner city as somewhere to visit with a guide.
