Why now

Shoulder season in July: 38°C days, dry, sea 26°C.

Go outside high summer if Ephesus matters: the site has almost no shade and fills with cruise-ship groups from Kuşadası by mid-morning. Autumn brings the Urla grape harvest and a calmer Alaçatı; the city itself works in any month.

Best months here: May, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

İzmir is a working Aegean port that happens to have Ephesus down the railway line: secular, seaward, unbothered by tourism, with a long waterfront where the evening is spent on the grass with a beer and a bag of sunflower seeds. It suits people who want a real city with a bazaar and a bay, then a day among Roman ruins, rather than a resort.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Ephesus early, from the upper gate downhill to the Library of Celsus; pay extra for the Terrace Houses.
  2. 02Get lost in Kemeraltı bazaar, then drink Turkish coffee in the courtyard of Kızlarağası Han.
  3. 03Eat boyoz and a boiled egg for breakfast, İzmir köfte for lunch, midye dolma on the Kordon at dusk.
  4. 04Ride the Asansör in Karataş, a 1907 public lift, and walk Dario Moreno Street below it.
  5. 05Take the ferry from Konak to Karşıyaka at sunset and come back for dinner in Alsancak.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

AlsancakThe Kordon promenade, bars on Kıbrıs Şehitleri, restaurants and most of the hotels; the obvious first base.
KonakThe clock tower, Kemeraltı bazaar and the ferry pier; loud by day, quiet at night, good for bazaar-first visits.
KarşıyakaAcross the bay by ferry, residential and local, with its own promenade; for people who like living where the city lives.
SelçukThe small town beside Ephesus, an hour and a half away; sleep here for a dawn start at the ruins and the Basilica of St John.

Stay in Alsancak for a first visit, within walking distance of the Kordon and the ferries; the hotels around the Basmane station are cheap but tired. Add a night in Selçuk if Ephesus is the point of the trip.

Unusual things

  • ◦Havra Sokağı in Kemeraltı, a street of old Sephardic synagogues being restored one by one, some open to visitors.
  • ◦Sığacık, a walled fishing village near Seferihisar with a Sunday producers' market and the ruins of Teos nearby.
  • ◦The Gediz Delta bird reserve at Çiğli, where flamingos feed in the salt pans within sight of the city's outskirts.

Day trips

Ephesus and SelçukİZBAN train to Selçuk, about 80 minutes, then a short taxi or minibus to the site — The Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre; the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk holds the Artemis statues.
