AlUla
You can be here in January for about €1,397, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in January: 21°C days, dry.
The visitor season runs through the cooler months, when the concert and arts programme is on and hotels fill at weekends; the months either side are quiet and warm rather than punishing. In high summer several sites shorten their hours and walking at midday is impractical.
Best months here: January, February, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

AlUla is a valley of sandstone outcrops and date palms in north-west Saudi Arabia, opened to visitors only in 2019 and still being built around its Nabataean tombs. It suits people who like archaeology and empty desert more than nightlife, and who do not mind booking everything ahead: the main sites are visited on timed, guided tours run by a single authority, and there is no alcohol.
What you can do
- 01Book the Hegra tour: more than a hundred Nabataean tombs cut into sandstone, with Qasr al-Farid standing alone on the plain.
- 02Walk the mud-brick lanes of AlUla Old Town in the late afternoon, then climb to the Musa bin Nusayr fort.
- 03See the lion tombs at Dadan and the inscriptions of Jabal Ikmah, both older than Hegra.
- 04Drive out to Elephant Rock for sunset; the sunken seating pits fill quickly, so arrive early.
- 05Cycle or walk the Oasis Heritage Trail through the palm groves and abandoned farmhouses of the old oasis.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in or near the Old Town or AlJadidah if you want somewhere to walk to in the evening; the Ashar Valley resorts are striking but isolated. Book well ahead for the winter season, when rooms are scarce.
Unusual things
- ◦Jabal Ikmah, a canyon of Dadanitic, Aramaic and early Arabic inscriptions, read on a short guided walk.
- ◦The restored Hejaz Railway station at Hegra, with a locomotive from the line the Ottomans built towards Madinah.
- ◦Stargazing among the Gharameel rock pillars, an hour out of town, with telescopes set up by guides after dark.
